If the notes accompanying this track on SoundCloud are to be believed, when the trio known as Samaris put “Black Lights” together, the finished product was originally 15 minutes long. I’m desperate for them to release that long version out into the world because I simply can’t get enough of this truncated version. Written over the course of a year during the band’s travels to Ireland, Berlin, and their hometown of Reykjavik, this tune moves and evolves in a wonderful fashion over the course of its nearly six-minute running time, with ideas and moods rising and receding with measured calm and a keen ear for dynamics. Now I have even more reason to be excited about the group’s forthcoming album, out on June 10th.
