Frankly, I’m a little surprised we haven’t been hearing more cover versions of this Arcade Fire track, found on that Canadian band’s second album Neon Bible. It has all the moody hallmarks—sharply expressive lyrics and a subtly catchy melody—that are ripe for reinterpretation. Greta Svabo Bech, a terrific singer-songwriter from the Faroe Islands, decided to heed the call and, at this early point in 2016, let this carefully constructed cover fly free into the world. She wisely dials back the music to the bare essentials, thereby keeping us focused on her windswept voice that completely deflates Win Butler’s masculine bombast. It’s delicate work, but Bech proves skillful and careful as an arranger and performer.
