Norwegian artist Ane Bjerkan recorded her newest EP, Songs for Jirka, in what she describes as a “dark and cold part of the Czech Republic.” The region’s bleakness unsubtly permeates EP standout “We Are The Young Ones,” but Bjerkan loses none of her Nordic touch to her Czech whereabouts. As she sings of “our fight to survive our desires” (which, given that this is a song titled after young people, might be a statement on how we destroy our planet to feed our endless desire for amusement), her eerie loops of harmonium cling to dour pianos to paint a sonic portrait of apprehension. Although Bjerkan’s gorgeous voice shines some light on the affair, the song’s beauty stems from how well it captures that Czech darkness in just five-and-a-half minutes.
